To start, fill a drinking glass to the very brim with water. Next, place a stiff piece of cardboard or a playing card over the opening, ensuring there are no air bubbles. When you invert the glass over a tray and release your hand, the upward pressure of the air holds the card in place. In addition to being a great science experiment, this is a classic “bar trick” used by performers to defy gravity in casual settings. Method 1: Using Magnetism to Defy Gravity
The most famous way to defy gravity for beginners involves the “Magnetic Levitation Illusion.” This experiment uses the invisible force of magnetism to make a metal object float. Specifically, you will need a strong craft magnet, a paperclip, string, and tape. First, tie the string to the paperclip and tape the other end to a stable table. Next, hold your magnet directly above the clip and slowly lift it. Consequently, the paperclip will rise, pulled by the invisible magnetic field. By carefully adjusting the distance, you can make the clip hover in mid-air. This simple act to defy gravity is a foundational lesson in our Level 1 to 100 magic curriculum.
Method 3: The Anti-Gravity Hoop Glider
If you want to defy gravity through movement, the Hoop Glider is your best tool. Unlike a traditional paper airplane, this glider uses two hoops to create lift and stability. You will need a plastic straw, two strips of paper (one long, one short), and tape. Simply tape the hoops to each end of the straw. When you throw it, the air moving through the hoops allows the device to glide much further than a flat piece of paper.
